new music weekend / Friday 05-16-25
(New Music Weekend Intro)
Happy Weekend – have you heard that CDs making a comeback? Physical music is still desired. I want to touch it (“What’s My Age Again?”) That’s quite a line for the nurse’s office. No schoolwork getting done there. Vinyl really began to take off with Record Store Day which started back in 2008. Maybe they need a CD Store Day? (“All the Small Things”) I don’t even have a CD player in the house anymore
New Music Weekend: coming up: Slow Joy, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, & more
(Countdown Video)
New Music Weekend:
- I’ve been eyeing up this album release from Slow Joy ever since hearing the song “Gruesome” (clip) / I think the singer – Esteban Flores – reminds me of someone else (“Rock Show”) That’s Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 – another emo band. Not really. I don’t support that (“I Miss You”) That’s not fair. Blink-182 is punk. Let’s get back to Slow Joy (“Wound”) About a month ago that song came out – “Wound” – the 2nd release off the album A Joy So Slow At Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming – 13 tracks in all. By the way, within the Slow Joy videos, two masked characters are featured—the Bull and the Sugar Skull—who embody chaos and grief. This is the album’s third release “Here For You” (cut)
- There’s a video game and an HBO series called The Last of Us – neither of which I’m personally familiar with unfortunately, but fortunately for them, Pearl Jam is (“Future Days”) This past Monday, Pearl Jam released a four-song EP of their songs that have been used in both the video game and show and called it The Last of Us (“Present Tense (Redux)”) Apparently, there is a 12-inch vinyl EP version BUT – it’s available for preorder exclusively for members of Pearl Jam’s Ten Club fan organization. Explain me missing out on Ten Club (“Even Flow”)
- I did a tangent. We’ll get back to the new music. (“The Night Before”) Back in February, The Black Keys released their first song “The Night Before” off their upcoming album which is due out in its entirety on August 8th. Then in March, they threw another one at us called “Babygirl” (cut) Today, we get the album’s title track and 1st song that can be heard on the record – this is “No Rain, No Flowers” (clip)
- I do have several quick hits of new music, but first I’m going to tangent again – sorta. That new album from The Black Keys will be their 13th studio album. That’s a lot. I basically first heard of The Black Keys in 2010 with their 6th studio album: Brothers (“Howlin’ For You”) I have a point. I’m getting somewhere. I was just so excited to “find” a band that I enjoyed so much and then realize that there were 5 more prior albums to go back and enjoy. I love when that happens. (“Tighten Up”) Anyway, recently I was at my favorite place to get vinyl – Rainbow Records in Newark, DE – and I picked up their 3rd studio album – Rubber Factory (“Keep Me”)
- Whew – some tangent there, huh – several quick hits of new music // Feel bad – I really should have talked this one up – been waiting for this one to: Borderlands from The Talbott Brothers is all out for us to witness. 11 songs. Go listen to each one. I did add “Wild” to my weekly playlist that can be found at brentevans.net // Geez – this is a big one – maybe I’ll claim it for Missed Music Monday – Snoop Dogg has a new album Iz It A Crime – it’s a crime that Snoop’s only getting one line // Just last month – I was hyping up Petey USA and his release “The Milkman” (clip) His new album THE YIPS comes out July 11th but now we get a 2nd release to enjoy “As Two People Drift Apart” (clip)
Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.
I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.
