5K EVERY DAY – Day #209
(musical intro of “Hey Ladies” – Beastie Boys)
Initially, the Paul’s Boutique album from the Beastie Boys was a commercial disappointment, especially when compared to the massive success of Licensed to Ill.
(“And on the cool check-in. Centerstage on the mic.” cut from “The New Style” – Beastie Boys)
However, this sophomore album was clearly ahead of its time and reportedly contained anywhere from 100 to over 300 samples. The album became known as the “Sgt. Pepper of Hip-Hop”
(“Shake Your Rump” clip – Beastie Boys)
The fratboy, witty wordplay can still be found today on a day that I did run.
(Day #209)
Paul’s Boutique was released on this date back in 1989 – makes it 36 years old.
