New Music Weekend / 9/12-9/14/25
(New Music Weekend Intro)
Happy Weekend – you know, I can’t wait. I’m gonna play the new Black Pistol Fire (“High Horse” cut) The song is “High Horse” which was released to coincide with their new tour. “They” being “Black Pistol Fire”. They’re going to be in Philly next month – I really can’t wait.
Who’s coming up – Twenty One Pilots – every single one of them (sorry, dad joke, I’m old), King Princess, the Gorillaz, Little Simz and more
(Countdown Video)
New Music Weekend:
- Twenty One Pilots just delivered their eighth and final album in a conceptual saga that began back in 2015 with their album Blurryface (“Stressed Out” clip with “Blurryface” line) The new album called: Breach provides a resolution to this ongoing story and picks up where their last record, Clancy, left off (“Overcompensate” clip with “I’m Clancy” line) The lead single sets the stage for the rest of the album’s dark tone. Released back in June – this is “The Contract” (“Contract” clip) I have to admit it was their 2nd release that made me sit up and want some more Twenty One Pilots (“Drum Show” clip) Pounding rhythms and a great melody – the song is “Drum Show” and it features the first-ever vocal contribution from drummer Josh Dun (more “Drum Show” clip) The final single released came along with a nearly ten-minute-long music video that directly concludes the tale with throwbacks to their past videos. It’s also the album’s opening track and it’s an epic one – “CIty Walls” (“City Walls” clip) With Breach, Twenty One Pilots give you a total of 13 songs, the 3 just talked about were released as singles. Digging deeper into the album, another song to tap the water with is “Garbage” (“Garbage” clip)
- The singer, songwriter, and producer from Brooklyn – King Princess – first gained fame with her hit single “1950” (“1950” clip) The first artist signed to Mark Ronson’s label, Zelig Records, was King Princess. She was there for her first two albums, but has now gone independent with her third album: Girl Violence (“Girl Violence” clip) The album’s title track “Girl Violence” is also the opening track which sets the dark, moody tone for what’s coming next (“Cry Cry Cry” clip) That’s the album’s second release – “Cry Cry Cry” – which certainly captures the album’s vibe with a sarcastic take on heartbreak. According to King Princess, this was written about a past breakup and the realization that the relationship wasn’t right. (more “Cry Cry Cry” clip) Looking past the three prior released singles, the song I found the most intriguing was the deliciously confusing song called “Jaime” which captures the conflicting feelings of a crush on a “mean girl.” (“Jaime” clip)
- Several quick hits of new music: one of my favorites that I only got into this year but she’s been around since like 2015. I’m talking about Little Simz. She released a single called “Don’t Leave Too Soon” which is off the soundtrack of the new film, Steve, in which Little Simz also stars. We can enjoy the song today, but we need to be patient for the movie’s arrival to Netflix on October 3rd // 5 New Albums that are available at your fingertips this weekend: Matt Maeson, Ed Sheeran, Dance Gavin Dance, Ice Cube, and Spinal Tap – yes, the fictional band is back with a new album coinciding with the release of their new movie – The End Continues // Damon Albarn (all-barn) has officially announced the next Gorillaz album. The follow-up to 2023’s Cracker Island is called The Mountain. We’ll get to enjoy it all on March 20th – 2026 – that’s a week before my birthday – wow! In the meantime, we do get to enjoy one of these 15 tracks early – thanks Damon – here’s “Happy Dictator” (“Happy Dictator” clip)
I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.
