Rick Rubin Saw a Poem — and It Became an RHCP Hit

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Opening of “Under the Bridge”)

January 8th but the year – 1992.
That’s the day the Red Hot Chili Peppers hit No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart with “Under the Bridge.”

(Music Cut 2 — verse settles in)

The song actually started as a poem —
something Anthony Kiedis had written.

Producer Rick Rubin came across it while reviewing new material and said,
“We’ve got to do this.”

(Music Cut 3 — brief vocal lead-in)
