(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend! Happy Father’s Day Weekend! If you got one, be sure to go and hug it.

It is okay to say too – we’re all just gross, little boys that are all grown up now.

Let’s get right to it – New Music Weekend

Who’s coming up! There will be some storytelling with Gary Clark Jr. and Black Pistol Fire, but then we’ll venture towards the always prolific King Gizzard who surprise, surprise has another album, double shot of Kane Brown because it’s just that good, and more.

New Music Weekend:

  • I was first introduced to Gary Clark Jr. when he appeared in the Jon Favreau film – Chef (clip) Great movie if you haven’t seen, but despite the actual movie itself, I think I remember it more because of Gary Clark Jr. I was like – wait, who is that guy? (clip) How much did I like Gary Clark Jr? Easy – I needed to go see him live – at the Fillmore in Philly. BUT – before he came on that night. Two other dudes walked out onto the stage and I thought they were tuning up his equipment and such. But then the guy behind the drum kit took his shirt off and the other one with aqua blue guitar started something (clip) Black Pistol Fire was the opener that night and they won me over. To me, one of the most entertaining and enjoyable bands to see live. So loud, So raw, And only two dudes on the stage. (clip) Today though we have new music from both Gary Clark Jr. AND Black Pistol Fire – together on the same song – “Rock Bottom” (clip)
  • A delightful time for all the Gizzheads out there – the band’s 27th album has fully dropped – Phantom Island (“Phantom Island” clip) Of course I’m talking about the one and only King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – 10 songs in all – in the past several months though, we’ve been treated to several of the songs already (“Grow Wings and Fly”) Now, I don’t have the Phantom Island vinyl yet, but I am looking foward to it because these King Gizzard albums always have a unique, artistic flare to them. (clip) I know that I’ve showed this before, but this is my first vinyl purchase of theirs – Oddments – an older album from 2014. The artwork is mesmerizing, so many colors and so many things happening (clip) Sketches of Brunswick East is another vinyl album that I have of theirs. Again – so much stuff going on here. I mention this with album covers because the Grammys have announced a new category “Best Album Cover” – I would want King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard to win for their music of course, but an album cover Grammy win would be cool as well! Whew – that was a lot of talky. Song being pushed as their next single is “Aerodynamic” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: The upcoming movie Materialists stars Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, but more importantly I think is that heard in the movie is a new song from Japanese Breakfast called “My Baby (Got Nothing At All)” (clip) // New singles from Twenty One Pilots, Chris Brown, Tanner Adell, Gunna, and Petey USA – you can catch them all on my Spotify playlist – link is at brentevans.net // I have openly admitted that I’m not the biggest country music fan, but I appreciate it and there is some that I can’t ignore, like Kane Brown and his latest release (clip) Song is called “2 Pair” and dare I say that it could be a song of the summer nominee? Who knows, but I’ll tell you how good I think it is but playing you another clip of it (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.
