MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”
(Music Cut #1)
By May 26th of 1991 –
Hard rock was sounding a whole lot darker.
Alice in Chains with “Man in the Box.”
(Music Cut #2)
At first –
the song was pretty much a commercial flop.
When the album Facelift was released in the summer of 1990,
for the most part – radio stations ignored it.
(Music Cut #3)
But then came 1991 –
and MTV’s Headbangers Ball
started playing “Man in the Box” in heavy rotation.
Within months, Facelift became the first Seattle grunge album certified Gold –
helping pave the way for Pearl Jam and Nirvana later that same year.
