How Garbage Found Its Voice

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 – “Only Happy When It Rains”)

Released on this day in 1995…

Garbage arrived…

and turned out to be anything but that.

(Music Cut #2 – “Only Happy When It Rains”)

This was Garbage’s self-titled debut album.

It started with three dudes: Butch Vig, Steve Marker, and Duke Erikson.

They were studio guys in Madison, Wisconsin, just making weird noise experiments.

(Music Cut #3 – “Stupid Girl”)

But they still needed a voice.

And they found it because MTV played one video at exactly the right time.

Steve Marker saw Shirley Manson singing with Angelfish on 120 Minutes.

That one random TV moment helped turn a studio experiment into Garbage.

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“You wanna hear about my new obsession?
I’m riding high upon a deep depression
I’m only happy when it rains.” – Garbage “Only Happy When It Rains”
