MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

On this date back in 1995…

Alanis Morissette was sitting at number one…

on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart…

with “Hand in My Pocket.”

(Music Cut #2)

Alanis and producer Glen Ballard…

had recorded the song as a demo.

But the record company wanted something different…

a new version…

with studio musicians.

(Music Cut #3)

Reluctantly… Alanis recorded another version.

But when the record company heard both…

guess which one they liked better?

The original demo.

And that’s the version…

we’ve been listening to ever since.
