INXS Played Their Final Show — But Never Stopped Creating | 5K Day 315

5K EVERY DAY – Day #315

(“Don’t ask me. What you know is true” line from “Need You Tonight”)

INXS lost their frontman, Michael Hutchence, back in 1997.
The last album released with him at the helm was Elegantly Wasted

(Hook from “Elegantly Wasted”)

On this date back in 2012, INXS played their final concert — performing in Australia with Ciaran Gribbin (Key-e-ron Grib-bon) on vocals, opening for Matchbox Twenty.

(“Live Baby Live” clip from “New Sensation”)

Sorry, Matchbox Twenty — this one’s about INXS.
Gribbin performed more than 50 shows as their frontman and even co-wrote two songs with Andrew Farriss — the same dude who wrote side-by-side with Michael Hutchence.

You adapt and you keep creating the next day’s run. I ran.

They Mocked Ween on MTV — Here’s What Happened Next | 5K Day 314

5K EVERY DAY – Day #314

(Musical Intro to “Push Th’ Little Daisies”)

Butt-head, from the animated series Beavis and Butt-head, stated after seeing the “Push Th’ Little Daisies” video from Ween that “These guys have no future.”

(Hook from “Push Th’ Little Daisies”)

Turns out, they did just fine.
Pure Guava, Ween’s third studio album, dropped on this date back in 1992 — and the band’s been thriving in their own weird lane ever since.

They never chased trends, never played it safe — they just kept doing their thing.
That’s the same energy I bring to my 5K Every Day – I ran.

Fiona Apple’s 90-Word Album Title and 3-Word Life Lesson | 5K Day 313

5K EVERY DAY – Day #313

(Musical intro of “Fast As You Can”)

The year: 1999. The date: today. The always-intriguing Fiona Apple released her second album — I’d love to say the full title, but then this video wouldn’t be a short.

Why? Because the title is 90 words long.

(“Fast As You Can” clip of “Fast as you can, baby. Run, free yourself of me. Fast as you can.”)

That mouthful of a title came from a poem she wrote after reading her 1997 Spin interview — where the writer completely misunderstood her.
Because of its size, the album is usually listed simply as When The Pawn….

She owned her voice, no matter how misunderstood. Today, I owned mine – I ran.

(Video Slide of Day #313)

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“Go with yourself.” – by Fiona Apple

From a 90-word album title to a three-word quote — I love that “run your own race” mentality.

No One’s Coming to Save You — The Flaming Lips Taught Me That | 5K Day 312

5K EVERY DAY – Day #312

(Musical intro to “Waitin’ for a Superman” – Flaming Lips)

A bit of an obscure pick today — but a good one. On this date back in 1999, The Flaming Lips released their defining single, “Waitin’ for a Superman.”

(Clip of the chorus/lyrics: “Is it getting heavy? Well, I thought it was already…” – The Flaming Lips)

The song’s about that moment you realize no one’s coming to save you — no one’s going to carry the load for you.
You’ve got to face your own long-term goals, yourself.

If you try waiting for the perfect day, the perfect mood, or the perfect motivation — you’ll never lace up your shoes. Today, I ran.

Leonard Cohen’s Final Lesson — And the Movie That Introduced Me to Him | 5K Day 311

5K EVERY DAY – Day #311

(“Everybody Knows” clip)

Everybody does know that rich, deep voice — Leonard Cohen. A poet, a prophet, and a musician inducted into just about every Hall of Fame imaginable.

(Brief, somber clip from “You Want It Darker”)

Sadly, we lost him today back in 2016. What’s incredible is that his final album, You Want It Darker, was released a couple weeks prior to his passing. That is a commitment to the very end. Showing up and staying on your feet when everyone else has stopped.

(Hook or closing line from “You Want It Darker”)

(Video Slide of Day #311)

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“It’s not that I’m so good. It’s that the others are so bad. It’s a matter of remaining upright. – by Leonard Cohen

They Called Themselves “The Civil Wars” — And Then It Came True | 5K Day 310

5K EVERY DAY – Day #310

(Musical intro to “Barton Hollow”)

On this day in 2012, the acclaimed folk duo The Civil Wars lived up to their name. After a show in London, they abruptly canceled the rest of their tour — citing “irreconcilable differences of ambition.” They never performed together again.

(Opening lyrics to “Barton Hollow”)

It’s a tragic reminder that sometimes, the hardest battles aren’t with the world around us…
They’re with the person running right beside us — or staring back in the mirror.

Be kind to yourself. Win the quiet battles first.
Day #310 of 5K Every Day — done.

(Video Slide of Day #310)

The band’s name — The Civil Wars — was actually inspired by this quote.

QUOTE OF THE DAY (A leeson from The Civil Wars):
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.” – (Attributed to Ian Maclaren)

How Radio Taught Me to Run Like Bryan Adams | 5K Day 309

5K EVERY DAY – Day #309

(:05 Musical Intro of “Summer of ’69”)

From my radio days with that song, I always knew I had five seconds before hitting the post—meaning, the exact moment the vocals kick in.

(Opening line from “Summer of ’69”)

“Summer of ’69” can be found on the Reckless album, which was released on this date back in 1984. But something else pretty big happened on this day too…

(Hook from “Summer of ’69”)

Bryan Adams himself was born on November 5th, 1959. A double anniversary — a reminder that when you follow your passion, the results follow too. The albums, the success, the life you build — it all comes from showing up, day after day… and just hitting that post.

From CCR to ‘Alright, Alright, Alright’ | 5K Day 308

5K EVERY DAY – Day #308

(Musical intro of “Have You Ever Seen The Rain”)

On this day — November 4th — Matthew McConaughey celebrates another trip around the sun. So why not lean into the sound of one of his favorite bands?

(Hook from “Have You Ever Seen The Rain”)

Creedence Clearwater Revival — always steady, always soulful — and yeah, they sound like they’ve been rained on a few times too. All sun today though, for my 5K Every Day.

From “Ice Ice Baby” to “Under Pressure” | 5K Day 307

5K EVERY DAY – Day #307

(Musical Intro to “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice)

Robert Van Winkle better known as Vanilla Ice had his song “Ice Ice Baby” hit #1 today back in 1990.

(Hook of “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice)

That milestone made him the first rapper ever to top the Billboard Hot 100. Not bad for a song built on a sample from a couple of legends.

(“Under Pressure” bass riff)

That’s right — David Bowie and Queen’s “Under Pressure” gave Mr Van Winkle and the track its heartbeat.

Some days, you just have to find your own rhythm… and run with it.

From the Foo Fighters’ Basement Album to My 5K Every Day | Day 306

5K EVERY DAY – Day #306

(Musical Intro to “Learn To Fly”)

On this date back in 1999, the Foo Fighters dropped their third studio album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose

(Hook — “I’m looking to the sky to save me…”)

This album was recorded in Dave Grohl’s basement and it was all about rebuilding, rediscovering, and just keeping it simple.

Just like my runs – keep showing up and keep moving it forward.
