Today is officially Hip-Hop Day – we have DJ Kool Herc to thank for gifting us this musical genre

On this date, back in 1973, a back-to-school party in the Bronx was hosted by DJ Kool Herc – the innovator of isolating and looping the “breakbeats” from funk and soul records. The rest is history as Hip Hop spread everywhere.

New Music Weekend / Friday 08-08-25

Happy Weekend! You know with my summer vacation officially over and having seen my Eagles live and in person playing some American football already. I couldn’t help myself – I looked into when Pumpkin Spice flavors would be arriving to Starbucks and Dunkin. (parody clip of “Pumpkin Spice Latte”) For Starbucks, the magical date for their Pumpkin Spice Latte is August 26th. As for Dunkin, they deliver the pumpkin flavor glory a bit earlier on August 20th. I won’t lie – I’m excited.

I am also excited for what’s coming up on New Music Weekend: Goose and Geese, you’ll see, Ethel Cain, G. Love, Yungblud, and More

New Music Weekend:

• This past April – Jam band – Goose released their album, Everything Must Go (“Give It Time” clip) Goose, is not to be confused with Geese, which is the plural of Goose, but is also an entirely different band altogether (“Taxes” clip) By the way, Geese have a new album arriving on September 26th, but back to Goose (“Your Direction” clip) We received a brand new original song called “Royal” which appears to be a standalone single and not a part of a Deluxe verison of this past spring’s release. (“Royal” clip) The lyrics are about the passing of a loved one and the lasting legacy that they leave behind. It’s a tribute to someone who was “royal” in the eyes of who wrote it. “Royal” is definitely, a slower, more reflective track, from Goose. (another “Royal” clip)

• Ethel Cain just dropped a prequel to her breakthrough album, Preacher’s Daughter (“American Teenager” clip) New album is called: Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You and it’s being described as a collection of songs about a fictional love story (“Nettles” clip). Ethel Cain is actually a character, a persona created by the artist Hayden Anhedönia. While the stories are fictional, they’re deeply inspired by her own experiences growing up in a religious Southern Baptist family. Did I ever tell you that I was a son of preacher man? (“Son of a Preacher Man” clip) Yeah, I did a little selfish tangent there. The topic is Hayden Anhedonia aka Ethel Cain. Her unique blend of gothic Americana and indie-folk has a dedicated following. And this album – again called Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You is a project for listeners who appreciate deep storytelling and unique sonic palettes. Here’s the song being highlighted on Spotify – “Dust Bowl” (clip)

• Several quick hits of new music: G.Love & Special Sauce just released “Feel Me Better” but this isn’t just a standalone single; it’s the first track from his new album, Ode To R.L., which is scheduled for a full release on November 14th. // Five new albums to check out this weekend: The Jonas Brothers, Halestorm, Gunna, Good Charlotte (clip of the “Anthem”) – yup – those guys, Good Charlotte, and The Black Keys // Yungblud visited Hansa Studios in Berlin, Germany, which is a place where David Bowie recorded his albums Low and “Heroes”, and where U2 recorded Achtung Baby. Yungblud did a rerecording of a recent track released off of his Idols album – which for me is album of the year so far. Here’s that track “Zombie”. (clip)

The documentary was filmed at Hansa Studios in Berlin and features live renditions of songs from Yunglud’s recent Idols album. This is the same studio where U2 recorded their Achtung Baby album.

5K EVERY DAY – Day #220

On this date in 1966, The Beatles’ landmark album, Revolver, was released in the U.S.

Revolver was The Beatles’ first album made with the full understanding that they wouldn’t perform the songs live. An example on “Tomorrow Never Knows” – there was recorded guitar solos from George Harrison, they were then reversed, and added to the track.

In essence, The Beatles turned the studio into an instrument with Automatic Double Tracking, Tape Loops, and experimenting sounds that could never be recreated on stage.

But did they run a 5K every day – sorry, that’s the best transition that I’ve got. I ran.

Yesterday, we remembered MCA of the Beastie Boys and today, we turn our attention to the forever gifted singer-songwriter, Elliott Smith who would have been 56 today.

While Elliott Smith’s songs weren’t always filled with happiness and joy, his music was rather mesmerizing to the dedication of one’s craft. The deep focus on details, the artistry of the work. I think about these things when I run – just getting back to the basics and doing the work. I ran.

Today, August 5th, we celebrate the birthday of a true hip-hop legend and an advocate for peace

Some of those “back in the day” lyrics weren’t always about peace, Adam Yauch, also known as MCA, of the Beastie Boys would have been 61 today.
