Favorite Album of 2024 is still Producing in 2025 / New Music Weekend: Green Day, Pulp, Ken Carson

new music weekend / Friday 04-11-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend! Or – I should say Happy “Record Store” Weekend! (Record in my Head)

Speaking of records – this one – Jack White’s No Name album was my #1 on Top 20 albums of 2024. Why am I talking about it today? (clip – must tell 7 friends) My favorite song off the album is now the song being pushed on AltNation – “Archbishop Harold Holmes” – (cut) It’s truly climbing up higher and higher on my favorites of all time from Jack White.

Alright – Who’s coming up! Green Day, Arcade Fire, Pulp, Ken Carson, and More

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • I just mentioned Jack White owning the #1 slot on my Top 20 albums of 2024. But kicking off that countdown at #20 was Green Day with their Saviors album (clip) I said it then and I’ll say it again “I forgot how good this album was.” And now -we have arriving on May 23rd, an expanded deluxe edition of Saviors (clip) Dubbed Saviors (édition de luxe), the expanded version includes seven additional tracks to the original 15-song album. Today – we get to enjoy one of those extras – “Smash It Like Belushi” (clip)
  • Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire have announced their 7th studio album called Pink Elephant (“Pink Pony Club”) Elephant, Pink Elephant – which the band describes as “that paradoxical effect where the effort to suppress a thought leads to it being impossible to avoid.” (blank stare) May 9th the album arrives, but one of the new songs is here early “Year of the Snake” (clip)
  • Pulp are back for More – that’s actually the name of their upcoming album. First one in 24 years (“Common People”) June 6th – More arrives. Today, though we’ve got the album’s track #1 “Spike Island” (cut)
  • Two of most favorite dudes that I listened to last year. Shaboozey (clip) and Myles Smith (clip). So, guess what – together they’re doing a song “Blink Twice” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Happy 25th Birthday to Ken Carson. How did he celebrate? By releasing his 4th studio album – 22 songs in all. It’s called – More Chaos / Another big album out that I have to mention – Bon Iver – 11 tracks – all wrapped up under the title of SABLE, fABLE // Canadian legend Joel Plaskett turns 50 next week – he’s my 50s club – welcome. To celebrate, a whole bunch of Canadian musicians joined together to cover his songs for a compilation titled: Songs from the Gang – A Celebration of Joel Plaskett. And yes – that sounds like he’s dead, but instead just 50. A band that jumped out to me who did one of his songs was the Arkells. They covered “Come On, Teacher” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Twas the Day before Record Store Day and That’s All I’m Thinking About / Quote of the Day from Post Malone

5K EVERY DAY – Day #101

(“On A Plain” song)

Twas the day before Record Store Day and – yeah, it’s not Nirvana that has a vinyl release. Instead it’s the Ambassador of Record Store Day 2025 – Post Malone

(“Circles” song)

That’s an actual Post Malone song. However, what he is releasing tomorrow on vinyl is Post Malone Tribute to Nirvana. Can’t play you anything from that because it doesn’t exist except for the vinyl. That’s why I need to go get that vinyl tomorrow.

(Day #101)

Oh yeah – I ran. My mind is on getting that record tomorrow, which me luck.

What President invented Jogging? / 100 Days of Running / Quote of the Day from President Teddy

5K EVERY DAY – Day #100

(AJR “100 Bad Days”)

Via Doris Kearns Goodwin book – “The Bully Pulpit”

“Even Roosevelt, with his singular disciplined drive, managed to quit work early four or five afternoons each week for a game of tennis or jog through Rock Creek Park.”

That was 1890 – did Theodore Roosevelt invent jogging?

(AJR “100 Bad Days”)

People at parties will be – “Don’t go near Brent. He just talks about exercise all the time.”

Yesterday was 99, today it’s 100.

(“99 Red Balloons”)

Today’s number is 99 for myself and flashing this card “I ran”

(Day #99)

FYI – I do like the 99 Red Balloons remake from Goldfinger

(“99 Red Balloons”)

That one really kicks. Does anyone say kicks anymore or did I just age in front of everyone?

Anyway – with 5K Every Day, I hope that helping to inspire some people with their own discipline, consistency, and commitment to showing up every single day.

Zoo Day! Share it with a friend – “Just A Friend” / Quote of the Day from Matt Berninger

5K EVERY DAY – Day #98

(“We Like the Zoo” Matt Berninger)

Happy National Zoo Lovers Day. I am NOT going to the zoo today – mainly because somebody had the nerve to turn winter back on. That’s not fair.

Matt Berninger of The National guests on that song “We Like the Zoo”

(clip)

He also guests on this Booker T / Biz Markie remake:

(“Just a Friend”)

Today, would have been Biz Markie’s 61st birthday. Unfortunately, we lost him back in 2021.

“Pick Me Up” for Monday – it’s National Beer Day – Celebrate! Quote of the Day from Homer Simpson

5K EVERY DAY – Day #97

(song)

Welcome to National Beer Day – not to be confused with September 7th which, of course, is National Beer Lovers Day. Big difference.

(Homer – Beer)

We’re having pasta tonight, so I won’t be celebrating with the beer beverage.

However, it did make me wonder when it’s Boxed Wine Day – September 9th.

All this alcoholic beverage talk. Please know – I still continued this today.

This Ear-worm of a Song is Stuck / Quote of the Day from Kevin Kelly via Arnold

5K EVERY DAY – Day #96

(song)

As explained by Wikipedia, “Cotton Eye Joe” is a song by the Swedish Eurodance group Rednex, released on August 12th back in 1994. I know it has nothing to do with today’s date, so why am I playing it.

(song)

Twice I heard it yesterday at my daughter’s softball opening day ceremony. That should be illegal. It’s already a song that can get stuck and then to play it twice – super stuck. I ran.

Memorable Sad Day for Grunge / Quote of the Day from Kurt Cobain

5K EVERY DAY – Day #95

(“All Apologies”)

On this date, 31 years ago at the age of 27, we lost Kurt Cobain.

BUT – also on this date, 23 years ago at the age of 34, we lost Layne Staley

(“Would”)

April 5th will forever be a sad, sad day for grunge.

Mondo Cozmo Reaching Out Again with Shine / New Music Weekend: Miley Cyrus, Sleigh Bells, The Waterboys

new music weekend / Friday 04-04-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend! It’s baseball season, so I’m happy. BUT – you know who is also a happy guy – Mondo Cozmo (clip) His song “Shine” which was the 5th track on his 2017 debut album Plastic Soul but the song was revived (it will always be good) since it was played out during The Reacher season 3 finale (clip) I can’t actually play you what I want without getting in trouble. But that’s Reacher and I’m excited for Mondo Cozmo who is originally from Philadelphia. Living in LA now, but from Philadelphia. Cheer on those Phillies this weekend, Mondo. (clip)

New Music Weekend – Who’s coming up! The Big Sister of Noah Cyrus, Sleigh Bells ringing, The Waterboys (not Sandler), the Boss, and Ed Sheeran teaching us a new word.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • Just a couple weeks ago, I was talking about a new song from Noah Cyrus, but this time it’s her big sis Miley who this past week shared a beautiful pair of songs from her new album, Something Beautiful. We got “Prelude” as well as the title track (song) Now THAT is a major close-up. I wouldn’t want you guys to witness that from me. Miley though – that’s okay. The song does pick up a little (clip) I wasn’t quite ready for that, but I do like it. Again that’s the title track “Something Beautiful.” Album arrives on May 30th – 13 tracks in all. And for the weekend, we get a third one to kick back and enjoy (clip) Actually that one sorta makes you sit upright at attention, huh. “End of the World” is that song. Here’s something I read from Pitchfork’s Jazz Monroe: Miley compares this record of hers to Pink Floyd’s The Wall, “but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture.” She’s always fun. Can we play a little more of her rolling around? Please? (clip)
  • Recently, when I’ve talked about Sleigh Bells, I’ve been playing a clip of this song (“Tell ‘Em”). Which I do like a lot, BUT – I also like this other “oldie” from them (“Rill Rill”) “Rill Rill” but again I say “oldie” because it’s from 2010. Now, Sleigh Bells has released other albums since then, but today, we get their 6th album – I have to say this one slowly: Bunky Becky Birthday Boy (“Bunky Pop”) 11 songs in all; spread out over 32 minutes – it’s a quickie but aren’t they always the most fun. Wait – what are talking about? (“Tell ‘Em”) That’s right, Sleigh Bells – the song being pushed by Spotify is “Badly” (clip)
  • I really do listen to a lot of music from all over the genre place, but never fear there’s always one that sneaks up on me (“The Whole of the Moon”) The Waterboys from been around since the early 80s – formed in London by singer/songwriter Mike Scott. Something like 15 albums – it’s a lot – more than my fingers. Today, they dropped their new concept album, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper (“Ten Years Gone”) Bruce Springsteen is just one of the contributors on this album. Another one that really jumped out to me was the powerful voice of Fiona Apple on “Letter From an Unknown Girlfriend” (clip) This album tallies 25 tracks in all. When the Waterboys’ Mike Scott was speaking of Dennis Hopper, he said: “The arc of his life was the story of our times.” (clip) or //
  • Several quick hits of new music: Bruce Springsteen is opening his vault and letting out seven ‘lost’ LPs. Arriving on June 27th, it’s called Tracks II: The Lost Albums – a collection of 83 songs on nine vinyl LPs or seven CDs – pick your preference. 74 of these songs have never been officially released in any form. // Beastie Boys Mike D (clip) is the producer of the new Hives album called: The Hives Forever Forever The Hives. Full drop on August 29th // ‘Azizam’ is a Persian word that means “my dear” when translated to English. It also happens to be the new love song from Ed Sheeran about his wife, Cherry Seaborn (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Spinning the Lime Green Circle of INXS / Quote of the Day from Leo Tolstoy courtesy of Ryan Holiday

5K EVERY DAY – Day #94

(“Need You Tonight”)

The other day I heard that song played at the Edge Gym. I was so happy, because normally it’s played because of me spinning the black circle here at home. As any true INXS fan knows from the album and video what follows “Need You Tonight”?

(“Mediate”)

“Mediate”. Ooooooo – that’s right. It’s a lime green circle that spins.

By the way – I ran another 5K today
