Feeling Spring without it being Spring / New Music Friday: Lady Gaga, Jason Isbell, Bob Mould, Star 99, & The Wrecks

new music friday / Friday 03-07-25

(New Music Friday Intro)

Spring isn’t even officially here yet, but my body – already getting those seasonal allergy symptoms creeping in. Can’t wait for all the allergy meds. Who’s coming up! Lady Gaga, Jason Isbell, Bob Mould, Star 99, and The Wrecks.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Friday:

  • All kinds of musical fun with Lady Gaga’s 7th studio album – Mayhem (clip) I most definitely would eat an apple if offered by Lady Gaga. That’s the song being pushed today on Spotify “Garden of Eden” (clip) 14 songs in all including the megahit “Die With a Smile” with Bruno Mars (clip) Also, the Swifties are convinced that track #9 “How Bad Do U Want Me?” has Taylor Swift on background vocals and is in actuality a Taylor song (clip) I can hear what they’re hearing. I can’t pick on them, because I’m hearing things too in track #12 “The Beast” (clip) Did you catch that little tinkling sound? It reminded me of Genesis with Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (clip) Let’s play the beginning of “The Beast” again (clip) See? Maybe? Eh – it gave me a reason to play Genesis (clip)
  • Jason Isbell hasn’t done a solo album in 10 years. But today, we’ve got one called Foxes in the Snow (clip) Sadly, this album has already been labeled by some as his divorce album – he filed in 2023. He doesn’t shy away with the lyrics that he sings. (Gravelweed clip) Let’s try and pick this back up. I am enjoying the sound of this entire album which is simply – just Jason and his guitar – a mahogany Martin 0 (oh) – 17 acoustic guitar from 1940. Listen to this part on the “Bury Me” song (clip)
  • 64 Year Old Bob Mould began his musical career in the 80s as the guitarist and vocalist of the band Hüsker Dü (clip) Between then and now, he’s been musical busy, but today we’ve got his newest sound (clip) That’s the title track of the album “Here We Go Crazy.” 11 songs in all from Bob Mould. I talked about him the other day along with band, Star 99 (clip) They too dropped a new album called Gaman (gu – mon) – 10 songs in all. I’ve been enjoying track #1 “Kill” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Car Seat Headrest are back with their first new album in five years: Arriving on May 2nd is a self-described rock opera called: The Scholars. The first song was released “Gethsemane” and it’s nearly an album in its itself. Alright – not really, but the song does clock in at 10 minutes and 51 seconds // The Wrecks released a single this past October. It was the 1st song off a 6-pack EP that will be arriving in its entirety on April 11th. Today, we get the 2nd track called “Speed”. I like how this one speeds up as it plays along – you’ll have to go to my Spotify playlist to hear this one for yourself – visit brentevans.net // With every 1st Friday of the month, we receive another new song from Emmaline. A reminder – this will be happening all year long. March’s new song from the always seductive jazz singer is called “Hollywood Fame” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Everyone’s Favorite Love Song Can Be Found on this Album / “Quote of the Day” from Trent Reznor

5K EVERY DAY – Day #67

(“March of the Pigs” song)

On this date in 1994, Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral was released. From that album, most people will immediately recognize this song within the first several seconds.

(“Closer” song)

Yes – the only type of love song that Nine Inch Nails could ever create – “Closer”

(more “Closer” song)

There’s plenty of other good music on The Downward Spiral which again turns 31 today.

Also today – I ran.

Happy Birthday to “We Are The World” (& it’s National Cereal Day) / “Quote of the Day” from Lionel Richie

5K EVERY DAY – Day #66

(“We Are The World”)

Back in 1985 on this date of March 7th, the song “We are the World” was released as a single. Written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, it was recorded for charity to help battle famine in Africa.

(“We Are The World”)

An incredible Netflix documentary was done on this recording – called The Greatest Night in Pop. Something like this will probably never happen again with this supergroup of musical talent from Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan to Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper and Dionne Warwick. A magical day 40 years ago.

Speaking of magical, it’s National Cereal Day and I ran.

Peeking ahead to New Music Friday with Bob Mould and Star 99/ “Quote of the Day” from Topher Kearby

5K EVERY DAY – Day #65

(“Here We Go Crazy” Bob Mould)

I’m looking forward to sitting here Friday for some New Music Friday.

Some names that I know will jump out to people with new albums coming out are: Lady Gaga, Jason Isbell, and Neil Young. However, I’m looking forward to hearing from the old punk guy – Bob Mould – I played him at the beginning and new punk sounds from Star 99

(“Kill” Star 99)

Happy Friday Eve and I did do this thing today. Mission Accomplished.

My Daughter Enjoys Angry Music, too – like Korn / Quote of the Day via Jonathan Davis

5K EVERY DAY – Day #64

(Korn “Shoots and Ladders”)

The other day I talked about how my daughter sings along to FITZ and The Tantrums – which is awesome. BUT – I have taught her the power of Angry Music, too.

(Korn “Shoots and Ladders”)

She requests that one from Korn. So good. I ran today.

With Stranger Things, it’s Joe. But musically, it changes to Djo / Missed Music Monday with Djo

missed music Monday / Monday 03-03-25

DISCLAIMER:

This is the scribble that leads to the babble.

Sometimes, it gets tidied up; other times, not so much.

When all else fails: there’s video!

(“End of Beginning”)

So, his name is Joe. Joe Keery. But, his musical name is spelled this way – Djo.

And the D is silent. So, it’s still Joe.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

“Basic Being Basic” by Djo was released back on January 24th.

(clip)

That’s not the one that I’m talking about though. Last Thursday, we got the 2nd release off his upcoming 3rd studio album – The Crux which arrives on April 4th.

(clip)

That song is “Delete Ya” – again 2nd release. There’s a total of 12 new songs on The Crux.

And lastly, for those who don’t know about Djo – he is American actor Joe Keery from the Netflix show – Stranger Things.

Tune in tomorrow for: Quote of the Day!

Via the closet, my running tip for your shoes the night before / “Quote of the Day” from Dr. Dre

5K EVERY DAY – Day #62

(“Cleanin’ Out My Closet” song)

It is important to have a snare in your headphones. I’m missing one too.

Welcome to my closet.

(“Cleanin’ Out My Closet” song)

Every morning, I can be found here right around 4:45am sitting on this stool / ladder. Putting my shoes on.

Looking for some happy? Listen to FITZ and The Tantrums / “Quote of the Day” is via Lyrics from “I Just Wanna Shine”

5K EVERY DAY – Day #61

(Fitz and The Tantrums “Ahhhh”)

My 9 year old little girl has grabbed onto that song and belts it out whenever she hears me playing it. It’s a great song for anyone to be inspired by.

(Fitz and The Tantrums “Ahhhh”)

That’s Fitz and The Tantrums – a show that I was simply given tickets to several years ago in Philly and thoroughly enjoyed. I knew they were good, but the happiness that they emitted. It was something. I think we could all use some happy right about now, right?

For Inspiration, What Music Was Listened to prior to “Black Hole Sun” recording? / “Quote of the Day” from Chris Cornell

5K EVERY DAY – Day #60

(“Black Hole Sun”)

On this date back in 1995, Soundgarden won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for that song “Black Hole Sun” – by the way, prior to recording that song, Chris Cornell listened to Sintra for inspiration.

(“Black Hole Sun”)

That was NOT Sinatra but just a little bit more of Black Hole Sun. For today, I was looking for something musical on this date. It was either Black Hole Sun or the fact that it’s Justin Bieber’s birthday. I chose my love for Chris Cornell.

By the way, I ran.

(Day #60)

#60 – getting there.
