My Blink-182 CD is Making a Comeback / New Music Weekend (no CDs)

new music weekend / Friday 05-16-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend – have you heard that CDs making a comeback? Physical music is still desired. I want to touch it (“What’s My Age Again?”) That’s quite a line for the nurse’s office. No schoolwork getting done there. Vinyl really began to take off with Record Store Day which started back in 2008. Maybe they need a CD Store Day? (“All the Small Things”) I don’t even have a CD player in the house anymore

New Music Weekend: coming up: Slow Joy, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, & more

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • I’ve been eyeing up this album release from Slow Joy ever since hearing the song “Gruesome” (clip) / I think the singer – Esteban Flores – reminds me of someone else (“Rock Show”) That’s Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 – another emo band. Not really. I don’t support that (“I Miss You”) That’s not fair. Blink-182 is punk. Let’s get back to Slow Joy (“Wound”) About a month ago that song came out – “Wound” – the 2nd release off the album A Joy So Slow At Times I Don’t Think It’s Coming – 13 tracks in all. By the way, within the Slow Joy videos, two masked characters are featured—the Bull and the Sugar Skull—who embody chaos and grief. This is the album’s third release “Here For You” (cut)
  • There’s a video game and an HBO series called The Last of Us – neither of which I’m personally familiar with unfortunately, but fortunately for them, Pearl Jam is (“Future Days”) This past Monday, Pearl Jam released a four-song EP of their songs that have been used in both the video game and show and called it The Last of Us (“Present Tense (Redux)”) Apparently, there is a 12-inch vinyl EP version BUT – it’s available for preorder exclusively for members of Pearl Jam’s Ten Club fan organization. Explain me missing out on Ten Club (“Even Flow”)
  • I did a tangent. We’ll get back to the new music. (“The Night Before”) Back in February, The Black Keys released their first song “The Night Before” off their upcoming album which is due out in its entirety on August 8th. Then in March, they threw another one at us called “Babygirl” (cut) Today, we get the album’s title track and 1st song that can be heard on the record – this is “No Rain, No Flowers” (clip)
  • I do have several quick hits of new music, but first I’m going to tangent again – sorta. That new album from The Black Keys will be their 13th studio album. That’s a lot. I basically first heard of The Black Keys in 2010 with their 6th studio album: Brothers (“Howlin’ For You”) I have a point. I’m getting somewhere. I was just so excited to “find” a band that I enjoyed so much and then realize that there were 5 more prior albums to go back and enjoy. I love when that happens. (“Tighten Up”) Anyway, recently I was at my favorite place to get vinyl – Rainbow Records in Newark, DE – and I picked up their 3rd studio album – Rubber Factory (“Keep Me”)
  • Whew – some tangent there, huh – several quick hits of new music // Feel bad – I really should have talked this one up – been waiting for this one to: Borderlands from The Talbott Brothers is all out for us to witness. 11 songs. Go listen to each one. I did add “Wild” to my weekly playlist that can be found at brentevans.net // Geez – this is a big one – maybe I’ll claim it for Missed Music Monday – Snoop Dogg has a new album Iz It A Crime – it’s a crime that Snoop’s only getting one line // Just last month – I was hyping up Petey USA and his release “The Milkman” (clip) His new album THE YIPS comes out July 11th but now we get a 2nd release to enjoy “As Two People Drift Apart” (clip)

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Spill Magazine, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

5K EVERY DAY – Day #135

(“Walk This Way” Run DMC)

During the journey of building my musical knowledge as a little boy, it was Run DMC that introduced me to Aerosmith. I had no idea who those white guys were.

(“Walk This Way” with Aerosmith)

I know it was supposed to be vice versa, but I didn’t know Aerosmith yet. I’m glad the collaboration happened though.

Good news – Happy Friday Eve and I ran.

(#136)

Oh yeah – Run DMC – on this date back in 1986 released their Raising Hell album, which featured “Walk This Way.”

“Apple Pie” by Rafferty – it’s National Apple Pie Day but it’s also International Hummus Day and National Fruit Cocktail Day

Save Your Tooth Month

(“Teeth” 5 Seconds of Summer)

Not easy finding a song with “teeth” in it. So – yes, it’s Save Your Tooth Month but Shouldn’t that be a year round goal?

Bands that George Carlin Would Enjoy Hearing on his Birthday / Quote of the Day from the Birthday Boy

5K EVERY DAY – Day #132

(“For What It’s Worth”)

Buffalo Springfield – that’s a band that birthday boy, George Carlin would enjoy.

He’d also listen to some guy named Bob Dylan.

(“The Times are A-Changin'”)

That’s what I read back in March – George Carlin enjoyed those bands

Back then, it was run #71

Happy “Go Hug Your Mom” Day aka Mother’s Day / Quote of the Day from Betty White

5K EVERY DAY – Day #131

(“Mama” – Genesis)

I realize there are far better songs for mothers.than track #1 “Mama” of the self-titled Genesis album from 1983

(“Mama” Hahaha)

We will NOT get into the details of what that song possibly means though.

Let’s change the subject – 5K Every Day lives on!

After the 5K Race, I Needed a Cold Beverage / Quote of the Day from Ryan Holiday

5K EVERY DAY – Day #130

(“Cold Beverage”)

On this date back in 1994, Philly’s Homegrown G. Love and Special Sauce released their self titled debut album

(“Cold Beverage”)

That song “Cold Beverage” was on the album. I have zero good transition to deliver today but simply I ran.

(Day #130)

I did race last night – got 2nd place for my old man group of 50 to 59. 16th overall with a 22:28 time. Looking forward to breaking my 22 minute mark this year at some point with another 5K race.

Any Tom DeLonge Band Helps Me Smile / New Music Weekend, also Providing Smiles

new music weekend / Friday 05-09-25

(New Music Weekend Intro)

Happy Weekend . . . I was struggling today. I know that I’ve talked about The National and how much they pull me through dark times (clip) Dark times – that sounds so evil. But – it can be easy to punch back at yourself. I do have someone else that is a guilty musical pleasure that helps put a smile back on my face. (clip) That’s right Angels & Airwaves it’s a band of Tom DeLonge’s. Besides them and Blink-182, in the long ago past, he also had a one off album called Box Car Racer (clip)

So good – alright who’s coming up: Dexter and the Moonrocks, some Brent favorites – Fitz, Berninger, and Elbow, we’ll also discuss Miley, Sleep Token, and More.

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • Four guys from Abilene, TX call themselves – Dexter and the Moonrocks (“Ritalin”) Last year, they released a six-pack of songs with the EP – Western Space Grunge (“Sad in Carolina”) This past week they released: Happy To Be Here – another six-pack of songs – for those who are counting – that tallies up to a half a case of music between last year and today. The song that I’ve been enjoying off this new EP is the tune “Sarahtonin” (clip)
  • Three rapid fire clips of Brent Music (“Clap”) Fitz and The Tantrums have officially begun the Spotify countdown to their new album that is arriving on July 25th. It’s called – Man on the Moon. That album’s title track just dropped this past week (clip) I talked about The National earlier. Their lead singer is Matt Berninger who has his 2nd solo album – Get Sunk – coming out at the end of this month. He’s already treated us to two of the album’s tracks and now we have a third called “Inland Ocean” (clip) British band Elbow are following up their 2024 album – AUDIO VERTIGO with AUDIO VERTIGO ECHO elbow EP 5 which appears to be like a continuation of the band’s release from last year. I’ll take it! And – we can all have it on June 6th. In the meantime, Elbow is giving us one its songs – “Sober” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: On May 30th, we get the 9th studio album – Something Beautiful – from Miley Cyrus. 13 tracks in all. 3 have already been handed out to us. Today, we get the 4th single called “More To Lose” and, of course, a video to go along with it. Visit brentevans.net for the link // The mysterious UK band, Sleep Token, have unveiled their fourth studio album called Even in Arcadia. Why so mysterious? Well, if you don’t know, Its members remain anonymous by wearing mask. I could claim to be one – I am so not. I can’t play. I’m just a good listener and so far, I’m enjoying Sleep Token // A band that I’ve talked about several times here before is noshows. The band doesn’t appear to have any full blown album coming our way, but a cover was dropped of the classic song ‘Free Ride’ (clip)
