There’s a game on Sunday?/ new music friday: Black Keys, Vampire Weekend, Usher, Sia / Charles Barkley quote

morning babble / Friday 02-09-24

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

“Yeah” clip

That’s the guy you’ll see performing during the Super Bowl Halftime show – it’s Usher. Unless of course, it’s Ludacris introduces him.

Morning Babble intro

Happy Weekend! Happy Super Bowl Weekend! As an Eagles fan – I really don’t want either team, I’m just cheering on the 49ers to lose. I understand football and realize that on paper the 49ers should win. But games aren’t played on paper but instead inside of our TVs. Chief keep finding a way to win. Plus, they have the Swifties on their side. (clip) If the Chiefs do actually win, I’ll enjoy the Taylor Swift talk that erupts one again – who by the way does have a new album coming out April 19th.

Ooo – for the quote of the day – I almost did this one. So much so, that’s it’s written out on a blue post-it. Here it is: “If you’re screaming at Taylor Swift saying she ruined football, you’re just a loser.” Love the fact that Taylor Swift has Charles Barkley backing her (clip)

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Let’s keep with the Halftime Talent for the Super Bowl – Usher, who has teased out that Ludacris and Lil Jon will also be there to undoubtedly to perform the well known hit song “Yeah” (clip) I’m excited for Nanas all across the land to turn to their grandchildren after witnessing this song and stating “I don’t think I can touch my toes anymore” That’s good to know, Nana. “AND – I don’t I wanna do it in my birthday suit.” Oooo – even better. (clip) Usher did drop a new album called Coming Home – over an hour of music spread out over 20 songs. Several of them we’ve already heard like “Good Good”, but the one seemingly being pushed by Spotify is “Kissing Strangers” (clip) Yeah that shot you just saw is the album cover with a shirtless Usher’s back to us, all while holding a peach (clip)
  • After nearly a decade, one of my favorites – Sia – she is back with a new studio album! This is her 10th one called Reasonable Woman which we actually new about that album title since 2020. Anyway – it’s really coming this time and arrives on May 3rd with a wide range of guests Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chaka Khan to Paris Hilton. The first song to be released doesn’t include either of them, but instead Kylie Minogue for the collaboration on “Dance Alone” (clip) I don’t think I ever want to actually lose my phone. I’ll put it in Airplane Mode – that stops some of the interference, right?
  • (clip) That was the first release called “Beautiful People” coming off The Black Keys upcoming album which fully drops on April 5th and goes by the title Ohio Players. We now get ourselves a 2nd release off the album. This time it’s their rendition of the William Bell classic “I Forgot to be Your Lover” (clip) A little chill, laid back – just in time for Valentine’s Day next week. I’m still hoping for more of their upbeat stuff (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: That Taylor Swift stud who announced during her Grammy acceptance speech that she’s got a new album coming out – “The Tortured Poets Department,” out April 19th // Girl in Red who I believed opened for Taylor Swift on several of the Eras tour shows has a new song out called “Too Much.” Full album this spring. // I had so much written today about new music – Kacey Musgraves, Maggie Rogers, Caroline Polachek (paw – la – kick) – all of them have really good music out //

But lastly – I’m excited to say that Vampire Weekend has a new album coming out – Only God Was Above Us – on April 5th. Two songs from this LP—“Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops”—are out next Friday the 16th. So, in the meantime, here’s one of my favorites from the band (clip) That song is “Holiday” off their 2nd Album Contra. Between now and April 5th – expect to hear a lot of Vampire Weekends clips – you’ve been warned. And that is your New Music Friday.

Thank you to Spotify, Rolling Stone, Apple Music, uDiscoverMusic, Pigeons & Planes, Pitchfork, Louder, Dan Deluca of the Philly Inquirer & I know there’s more.

Please subscribe on YouTube and spread the Babble wherever you can – Thank you!
