The Radio Story That Saved Matchbox Twenty

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 – “Push” opening)

Released just a few weeks earlier…

by July 3rd of 1997,

this song was all over rock radio.

Matchbox Twenty

with “Push.”

(Music Cut #2 – “Push” cut)

I’m a sucker

for a good radio story.

Rob Thomas has said

the band’s first single, “Long Day,”

didn’t connect

the way the label hoped.

So, Atlantic was even discussing

whether to drop the band.

(Music Cut #3 – “Long Day” cut)

Then a Birmingham, Alabama

program director named Dave Rossi

started playing “Push”

on his own.

The reaction was immediate.

Atlantic gave the band

another chance,

and now Rob Thomas calls “Push”…

“the song that saved us.”

You couldn’t stand to be near me
When my face don’t seem to want to shine
