MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”
(Music Cut #1)
Released on this day in 1993…
this song has a bassline you recognize
before the song even arrives.
The Breeders with “Cannonball.”
(Music Cut #2)
But that weird little wobble
in the bassline?
It was a mistake.
Josephine Wiggs played the riff flat in rehearsal…
and the band liked it so much – they kept it.
(Music Cut #3)
And that distorted sound?
Kim Deal sang through a harmonica mic
But live,
they recreated it
by putting a Styrofoam cup over the microphone.
So one of the coolest songs of 1993
was held together by mistakes,
feedback, and office break-room supplies.
