But the title came from something strangely small.

Courtney Love had given Kurt Cobain

an actual heart-shaped box…

filled with little objects like toys,

seashells, and pine cones.

Then Kurt took that image…

and Nirvana turned it into a video full of poppies,

a hospital bed, a little girl in a robe,

and surreal nightmare imagery.

And that year, MTV said:

“Best Alternative Video.”
