that would eventually spend…

exactly “One Week” at number one.

Ed Robertson packed the song

with references to everything…

from The X-Files…

to Harrison Ford…

to Japanese movies.

So how did he write all of that?

He didn’t.

Robertson originally improvised the lyrics.

“Chickity China, the Chinese chicken”…

and everything else flying through his head…

he was basically making it up.

And somehow…

that became Barenaked Ladies’ only number-one song in America.

For exactly one week.
