Released on this day in 1991…

Soundgarden gave us their third album…

Badmotorfinger.

(Music Cut #2 — “Rusty Cage”)

A few years later…

producer Rick Rubin approached Chris Cornell…

about rearranging “Rusty Cage”…

for another artist.

But Cornell couldn’t make the song work.

So he passed.

(Music Cut #3 — Johnny Cash, “Rusty Cage”)

That artist…

was Johnny Cash.

Initially, Cornell thought…

it was a terrible idea.

But when he finally heard Cash’s version…

Cornell admitted…

he was totally wrong.
