MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 — “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”)

Released on this day in 1995…

The Smashing Pumpkins gave us…

The first single from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

(Music Cut #2 — “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”)

“Bullet with Butterfly Wings” became one of the band’s biggest hits…

BUT – Billy Corgan had actually been working on parts of it…

long before the album even came together.

(Music Cut #3 — “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”)

In fact…

Corgan traced the song’s opening riff…

all the way back to 1993…

during the Siamese Dream sessions.

But the famous “rat in a cage” part came later…

while he was recording “Landslide.”

Some things just need to simmer for a while.

(Music Cut #4 — “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Someone will say, “What is lost can never be saved”
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.”

– Smashing Pumpkins “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”
