(Movies That Matter Intro)

Welcome to Movies That Matter, where we look at three movies worth knowing about before the weekend begins.

Tom Cruise may have doomed humanity – whoopsie, Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson have some very dark secrets, and a giant bunny – not good – is back on the big screen after 25 years.

What’s new? Tom Cruise is playing Digger Rockwell… in Digger.

(Digger clip – “I wasn’t expecting that”)

Digger is described as the most powerful man in the world — who is suddenly trying to convince everyone that he can save humanity.

One problem – he helped create the disaster.

So, in essence… save the world from yourself.

(Digger clip – “from sinking into chaos”)

And if that sounds complicated, I’m sorry – things aren’t getting any easier.

Dakota Johnson stars in Verity as a struggling writer hired to finish the books of a famous author played by Anne Hathaway.

(Verity clip – “You Must Have Questions”)

Then she finds a secret manuscript inside the house…

…and starts wondering exactly how much of it is fiction.

(Verity clip – “This is Verity”)

And finally… celebrating its 25th anniversary in a new 4K presentation, it’s Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko.

Say hello to Frank… a bunny rabbit.

The anniversary screenings run through October 4th.

That’s this weekend’s Movies That Matter. From saving humanity to dark family secrets to one very uncomfortable bunny, there should be something waiting for you at the movies.

Until next time – keep on popping the corn.
