had already become a number-one alternative hit…

but was STILL hanging around the charts!

The recording of this song for their Violator album…

was apparently a real headache!

They went through numerous versions…

and Martin Gore wasn’t satisfied with how it sounded.

The problem?

It sounded TOO MUCH like Depeche Mode!

So they went back and reworked the song…

until they had something they were happy with!
