MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 – “Gentlemen”)

Released on this day in 1993…

The Afghan Whigs gave us their fourth album…

and one of the darkest breakup records of the ’90s.

Gentlemen.

(Music Cut #2 – more “Gentlemen”)

Gentlemen was basically Greg Dulli…

digging through the wreckage of a relationship.

But when he got to one particular song…

he decided…

maybe the woman should finally get to tell her side.

(Music Cut #3 – “My Curse” – Marcy Mays vocal)

So the microphone was handed off…

to Marcy Mays of Scrawl.

BUT — when Dulli started telling her how he wanted it sung…

she told him…

to get out of the studio.

He did.

And when he came back…

he realized…

she was right.

(Music Cut #4 – “My Curse”)

And smother me in your love
