This Song Exists Because of a Book Layne Staley Read

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

Around April 17th, 1996…
this one was starting to show up on the radio.
“River of Deceit” – from Mad Season

(Music Cut #2)

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready came up with the supergroup’s band name…
after hearing a British term for the time of year when hallucinogenic mushrooms are in full bloom.

Mad Season.

(Music Cut #3)

But the song itself?
Came from something else entirely.
During recording, Layne Staley was reading a book — The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
And a lot of the song’s lyrics… came straight from those ideas.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be.” – Mad Season

Mumford & Sons Aren’t What You Remember… (In a Good Way)

NEW MUSIC THAT MATTERS

EAR-WORTHY MUSIC — EPISODE: PRIZEFIGHTER by Mumford & Sons

(“Rubber Band Man” Clip)

When you bring in Gracie Abrams, Hozier, and Chris Stapleton as features on your album, you’re not just stacking names . . . you’re stacking tone.

(“New Music that Matters” Opener)

Remember when Mumford & Sons were all banjos and stomp-claps?

This isn’t that.

(“The Banjo Song” Clip)

I say that… and then track three is literally called “The Banjo Song.”

Anyway —

The album is Prizefighter, their sixth project – and it feels like a band that’s grown up without losing their emotional core.

(“Shadow Of A Man” Clip)

That right there is “Shadow Of A Man.”

Not a single — at least not yet — but it’s the ear-worthy track of the album for me.

(more “Shadow Of A Man” Clip of “All I ever wanted was a reason to believe”)

That lyric right there is what locked me in on this song.

You’ve grown up since their first album — and so have Mumford & Sons.

Go spend some time with Prizefighter.

This Album Cover Has a Hidden Meaning

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

April 16th, 1996…
this album dropped.
Rage Against The Machine – “Evil Empire.”

(Music Cut #2)

And that cover… is not random.

That boy in a cape came from a 1940s comic book –

a character called “CrimeBuster.”

(Music Cut #3)

But look closer.

The “C” on his chest was changed to an “e.” For “Evil Empire.”

Originally, he stood for law and order –

Of course, Rage flipped that as well into something else.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Ya trying to tire me, tire me
Why don’t you get from in front of me?.” – Rage Against The Machine “Tire Me”

Most people think “Bulls on Parade” was the Grammy winner, but “Tire Me” (a deeper cut on the album) took the trophy.

This Song Chose the Wrong Movie… On Purpose

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

By April 15th, 1996…

this one was finally breaking through.

Deep Blue Something –

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

(Music Cut #2)

In the original draft…

there was no “Tiffany’s” at all.

The song was actually written around
another Audrey Hepburn film –

“Roman Holiday.”

But it didn’t quite work.

Didn’t roll off the tongue.

(Music Cut #3)

Wanting to keep the Audrey Hepburn theme…

Todd Pipes went through her films…

looking for a title that fit the rhythm he already had.

And “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”…

had the perfect cadence.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“So what now? It’s plain to see we’re over
And I hate when things are over
When so much is left undone” – Deep Blue Something

This Album Cost $6,000… And Then This Happened

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

April 14th, 1997…

this album started…

independently.

Creed –

My Own Prison

(Music Cut #2)

Completely self-funded.

The band scraped together…

six thousand dollars.

Recorded the whole thing.

Then drove copies…

radio station to radio station…

just trying to get it played.

(Music Cut #3)

That six thousand dollars…

turned into millions.

Over six million albums sold – just in the US alone.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“So I held my head up high
Hiding hate that burns inside.” – Creed

A+ Song Fails English Class

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

By April 13th, 1996…

you couldn’t escape this one.

Alanis Morissette –

“Ironic.”

(Music Cut #2)

And this song…

drove people crazy.

Especially English teachers.

Because none of it is actually ironic.

“Rain on your wedding day…”
That’s just bad luck.

(Music Cut #3)

Alanis wasn’t writing a definition.

She was trying to make you feel something.

And she even later admitted…

the most ironic thing about a song called “Ironic”…

is that there’s no irony in it.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Life has a funny way of helpin’ ya out
When you think everything’s gone wrong
And everything blows up in your face.” – Alanis Morissette

This Song Picks On The Beatles

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

By April 12th, 1995…

this one was starting to move…

beyond its Delaware roots.

The Caulfields –

“Devil’s Diary.”

(Music Cut #2)

Yeah… Delaware.

Newark.
Wilmington.

The Stone Balloon.
The Deer Park.

That’s where this all started.

(Music Cut #3)

And that line –
“I’m bigger than Jesus now…”

not random.

That goes back to John Lennon…
and that infamous Beatles quote from 1966.

(Music Cut #4)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Here in hell’s hammock just thinking up deviltry
Planet-wide panic’s a hat that’s so old.” – The Caulfields

Why This Song Sounds Like Beck… But It’s Not

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

Today is the 30th anniversary of this song’s release.

It’s also crazy to think that a band with a name like this has been a household name for three decades.

“Pepper” from the Butthole Surfers.

(Music Cut #2)

That bassline almost feels like something from Primus…

but the real hook are the vocals — that laid-back, spoken-word delivery.

A lot of people compared it to Beck’s “Loser.”

(Music Cut #3 – from “Loser”)

But the lead singer said that wasn’t it.

It actually came from Texas — that dry, almost conversational style.

Artists like Townes Van Zandt and the 13th Floor Elevators.

I just like how Gibby Haynes himself did his here:

(Music Cut #4 – back to “Pepper”)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“You never know just how to look
Through other people’s eyes.” – Butthole Surfers

Why Green Day Released TWO Songs at Once

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 – intro to “Brain Stew”)

Back on April 10th, 1996…
Green Day gave us a two-for-one single –
“Brain Stew”… and “Jaded.”

(Music Cut #2 – intro to “Jaded”)

These two songs are basically inseparable —
twins from the same moment.

At the time, Billie Joe had just become a father…
and was dealing with insomnia.

That’s “Brain Stew.”

(Music Cut #3 – line from “Brain Stew” – “I’m having trouble trying to sleep”)

And then “Jaded” is what comes next –
the aftermath.

When you’ve been awake too long…
and everything starts to feel a little off.

(Music Cut #4 – line from “Jaded” – “Somebody keep my balance, I think I’m fallin’ off
Into a state of regression”)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Always move forward
Goin’ straight will get you nowhere” – Green Day – “Jaded”

They Wanted This Song to Sound Like a Dumpster

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

By April 9th, 1993…

this was one of the biggest songs in the country.

Spin Doctors –

“Two Princes.”

(Music Cut #2)

And the sound…

wasn’t polished.

lead singer Chris Barron once said…

they wanted it to feel like something you’d find…

in a dumpster behind a club.

(Music Cut #3)

Because that’s where they came from.

New York bars.

CBGB.

Playing for hours…

just to keep people from walking out.

So that long, loose intro to “Two Princes”?

That was survival.

(Music Cut #4)

“I ain’t got no future or family tree, but
I know what a prince and lover ought to be” – Spin Doctors
