This Song Exists Because of a Book Layne Staley Read

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1)

Around April 17th, 1996…
this one was starting to show up on the radio.
“River of Deceit” – from Mad Season

(Music Cut #2)

Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready came up with the supergroup’s band name…
after hearing a British term for the time of year when hallucinogenic mushrooms are in full bloom.

Mad Season.

But the song itself?
Came from something else entirely.
During recording, Layne Staley was reading a book — The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
And a lot of the song’s lyrics… came straight from those ideas.

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“My pain is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be.” – Mad Season
