Elf is back in movie theaters and throughout the Babble / New Music Friday: Tate McRae, Andre 3000, Jason Kelce & Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend

morning babble / Friday 11-17-23

This is the scribble that leads to the babble. Sometimes, it gets tidied up; but other times, not so much. When all else fails: watch the video!

“Buddy the Elf. What’s your favorite color?”

Sky-Blue Pink – that was how my Pop-pop would always answer that question. So – same for me. Sky-Blue Pink is my favorite color.

By the way, Elf is back in theaters again to celebrate the film’s 20th year anniversary.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • Many radio stations all across the land are doing that switch – to all Christmas because – well, Santa comes next month (Elf drop) I’ve already talked about this holiday album before: A Philly Special Christmas Special performed by members of the Philadelphia Eagles in particular the offensive line (O-line clip) That was one of the infamous “Tush Push” specials that the Birds do. Pushing Tushies around. They’re trying to call it the Brotherly Shove (O-line clip). It’s a Touchdown machine! Sorry – back to the holiday album – it does go for a great cause and benefits Children’s Crisis Treatment Center and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. I’ll provide the link to pre-order: Click here! It’s all out on December 1st, but we’ve been getting weekly released songs. This week’s song has Jason Kelce and his brother Travis doing song together called “Fairytale of Philadelphia” (clip) Wait – did I really just talk about Travis Kelce without bringing up his girlfriend? (clip)
  • Exactly one year ago on November 17th, 2022 – Phoebe Bridgers released an EP album called – So Much Wine (Merry Christmas clip) it’s her Christmas album. It’s also an album that made me go back and relisten to her past albums: Punisher and Stranger in the Alps and become more of a Phoebe Bridgers fan. (boygenius clip) And yes, then there’s boygenius, which she is, of course, a 1/3 of that band, but that’s not where I was actually going with this one. I’m trying to actually talk about The National (clip) this past year, The National have released two albums already – which both albums are two of my favorites of the year and yes, I am working on a top 25 video. Let’s get to today though, this past week The National did a video release of the Phoebe Bridgers song, which is the title track off their recent album: Laugh Track – that took forever to get to this clip (clip)
  • André 3000 could be heard rapping on Killer Mike’s most recent album on the song “Scientists and Engineers” (clip) Today, André 3000 is releasing his debut solo LP called New Blue Sun. However – no rapping. (clip) That’s a flute – André is a flautist. When someone tells me about a flute, I think of a friend of mine in Jill from her Gingham Shmuz days, Jethro Tull, but then there’s that movie too . . . . (American Pie clip) Via Pitchfork’s Jazz Monroe, I learned that Andre bounced around this flute-heavy album to Frank Ocean as well as Tyler, the Creator who told him that one song helped him configure a complicated Louis Vuitton travel suitcase, saying, “It sounds like you’re chasing a butterfly through a garden and I figured it out.” – We all have that problem. Here’s a clip of the song – no joke the name “I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time” (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: The Smile – aka Thom Yorke’s other band – have announced their next album is due out January 26th and is called: Wall of Eyes. The actual title track “Wall of Eyes” is out today // After waiting over five years for a sequel, 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne have released Welcome 2 Collegrove – 21 tracks, nearly an hour of music and story narrations courtesy of 50 Cent // Porno for Pyros with the original line-up together again have released their first new song in 26 years – it’s called “Agua” // Think Later is the upcoming second studio album by Calgary native Tate McRae. We’ve already gotten “Greedy” but today we get “Exes”. I really had to study this video. (clip) Lots of hard work. Patience and time – studying that for the best clips (clip)

Welcome to Wednesday, which according to experts (click here for the article), is the best day to take off. A mid-week break doesn’t disrupt the work week but gives you time to recharge. Let’s take off on Thursday and Friday to compare and contrast.

New Music Friday:

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that!

  • I’m not the biggest fan of country music – at all. In turn, I realize that I don’t talk about country music too often on here. I’m not going to be fake. But – when there’s good music released like Kane Brown, I listen and I talk about it. Today, Chris Stapleton released his album – Higher. That man can sing. 14 songs, almost an hour of new music. The song being pushed today is “What Am I Gonna Do” – listen to the album (clip)
  • By the way, speaking of country music – congrats to Tracy Chapman who made history this past Wednesday night when her song “Fast Car” won Song of the Year at the 57th Annual Country Music Association Awards – CMAs. By the way, that’s 35 years after the song’s original release. (clip) Her win makes her the first Black songwriter, male or female, to win Song of the Year at the CMA’s. Luke Combs did the cover and it took off in the country musical world. Many artists have done the cover Sam Smith, Justin Bieber, Khalid. My favorite was done by the Black Pumas (clip)
  • Back in June, Fashion Designer and DJ, Peggy Gou released a single called “(It Goes Like) Nanana” – I’ll just play it. (clip) Fast forward to today and let’s bring on Lenny Kravitz (clip) There’s been a little collaboration between the two of them – Peggy and Lenny. It’s going to appear on her album due out in 2024. The song is called: “I Believe in Love Again” (clip) And speaking of Mr. Lenny Kravitz, he is set to release his new album called Blue Electric Light on March 15th. Last month, he did share the single “TK421″ and I’m sorta ready for this sound (clip).
  • At the beginning of the Babble, I did a teaser and played a couple clips of a Nirvana song called “Son of a Gun” (clip) It’s not that long of a song, so it will pretty much be the whole thing before I know it. Anyway – I saw release from two artists that I enjoy – Judah & the Lion and K.Flay. The song was called “Son of a Gun” – it’s not a cover though. Still good though (clip)
  • Several quick hits of new music: We are one week away from Dolly Parton releasing unto the world her Rockstar album // Lots of new Hip-Hop music out today – Rick Ross & Meek Mill, Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz, Lil Durk & Only The Family – some really good stuff and I’d play some, but uh . . . kids are around // Via his Instagram story, Frank Ocean dropped a one-minute teaser of new music. Come on Frank – we’re ready for the rest of it // Lastly, Sleater-Kinney’s forthcoming album, Little Rope, is out January 19th. Today, we got it’s 2nd released single called “Say It Like You Mean It” (clip)
