The New Music Trio I Missed: RKS, Laufey & Beach Bunny | Missed Music Monday

missed music monday / Monday 08-25-25

(“Missed Again”)

I’ve got 3 misses for your Monday – in baseball that’s a strike out – I really didn’t think I did that bad for New Music Weekend.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

There was a lot of goodness released this past weekend. First Up – Rainbow Kitten Surprise – they gave us their 2nd release off their upcoming album – Bones – due out next month on the 26th. Give or take a few – here’s “100 Summers”

(“100 Summers” clip)

Next – a full album drop from Laufey (lay-vey) called: A Matter of Time. her previous work was known for its nostalgic jazz and classical influences, but this album is a shift toward a more pop-infused sound AND Aaron Dessner of The National produced it – I’m listening.

(“Mr. Eclectic” clip)

3rd one – it’s a standalone single from Beach Bunny. Written at the same time as their most recent album, Tunnel Vision. Apparently it’s not a part of a future deluxe album – I’ll take what I can get. This is “Year of the Optimist”

(“Year of the Optimist” clip)

That’s my strikeout from New Music Weekend called Missed Music Monday.

My Run That Might End the Streak | Inspiring Words from Chris Martin | Day 236

5K EVERY DAY – Day #236

(Opening line of “Fix You” from Coldplay)

I don’t listen Coldplay too often, but that opening line from “Fix You” – I’m feeling right now.

“When you try your best, but you don’t succeed”

(More of “Fix You” from Coldplay)

I’m having some sharp pains in my left buttocks area – awesome huh – and well, I’ll need to see how I feel in the morning, but for today run #236 did occur.

A Run Inspired by Beck’s Chemtrails (and a Smiley Face) | Day 235

5K EVERY DAY – Day #235

(Clip of “Chemtrails” from Beck)

One of my favorite artists – Beck – with one of his more chill songs called “Chemtrails”

The other day a plane was in the sky (imagine that) doing some skywriting

(clip of a smiley face being created in the sky)

I watched that smiley face form. I was walking the dogs at the time. A little later, the plane did add a heart.

(clip of the heart made in the sky)

I did see other people’s post’s about it all over social media. Smiles being created by skywriting. I do run those trails a lot but haven’t experienced those skytop drawings before. I did run today.

(Video Slide of Day #235)

By the way, I do know that chemtrails are NOT skywriting AND the earth is round, thank you

Coming up for New Music Weekend – Jon Batiste, Water from Your Eyes, Royel Otis & more

(Countdown Video)

New Music Weekend:

  • The uber talented Jon Batiste who makes music just by walking by you released his 9th studio album – BIG MONEY (cut of “Big Money”) Nine tracks in all – in fact, the final track #9 features No ID who was also a co-producer on the entire album (cut of “Angels”) No ID recently teamed up on another album earlier this year with Saba (cut of “Woes of the World”) I really enjoy me some Saba – But that was back in March. More on Batiste’s album – when compared to some of his orchestral work, this album is definitely more stripped down. (cut of “Maybe”) “Maybe” is the name of that beautifully composed song which includes these thick, powerful chords from his solo piano playing. Love it! Then, the lyrics pose some big questions about one’s life and purpose (more “Maybe”) Making you think with these songs. Got one more – there’s a bluesy sounding, high energy tune called “Pinnacle” – just a word salad of lyrical fun (cut of “Pinnacle”)
  • Nate Amos and Rachel Brown are behind the band – Water from Your Eyes. Within their Spotify bio, they mention how their music has a hint of Jay & Silent Bob. You have my attention (clip of Jay and Silent Bob) Love those guys. Kevin Smith forever. Tangent back to Nate and Rachel or Water from Your Eyes (clip) Album is called: It’s A Beautiful Place and it’s being described as a “kaleidoscopic blend” of art rock, post-punk, and experimental pop, with moments of nu-metal drumming, grunge, and even dance-punk. Take their song “Life Signs” (clip of “Life Signs”) you go from this rhythmic vocal deadpan and then hard pivot into this raw, grunge filled guitar sound (more of “Life Signs”) I’m all in on this “kaleidoscopic” sound – I like that word. I made a card for it. (flash card) Just one more song, for now, that I’ve been enjoying from Water from Your Eyes off this new album of theirs called – It’s A Beautiful Place – is the song “Playing Classics” – the video is definitely one to check too with the teddy bear (cut of “Playing Classics”)
  • Typically, I only do 2 deep dives into albums. But – there was so much goodness out there, I had to do a 3rd (clip of “moody”) Royel Otis is the band. Previously, I heard a couple of their songs non-stop on Sirius XM’s AltNation – one was “Sofa King” – if you know, you know, if not – go listen to that song and enjoy, but then they also did a cover of “Linger” from The Cranberries (clip of “Linger”) Wonderful rendition of that classic tune from 1993. The 1900s – as my daughter pointed out to me the other day – anyway. New music (clip) I am enjoying this album called – Hickey. Several songs have been released like “Car” and “Say Something”, but I am enjoying the new one being pushed that also has a video to go along with it – here’s “Who’s Your Boyfriend?” (clip of “Who’s Your Boyfriend?”)
  • Several quick hits of new music: Back in March, I did a deep dive into Sombr (clip of “undressed”) I was basically begging for a full album drop – and now, we have one. I still need to dig into all as you all should, too. 10 songs under the album title – I Barely Know Her // Five more new albums to check out this weekend and we’ve got every musical flavor: Dominic Fike, Twenty One Pilots, Mac DeMarco, Wolf Alice and the Deftones. // If you enjoy King Crimson and Phish, then you’ll enjoy King Llama who by the way have a Sleuth Llama T-shirt that I want so badly (picture of the t-shirt) So cool, I’ll provide a link. However, the music from King Llama is an instrumental mix of jazz, rock, funk, and jam-band music that I’ve been enjoying while simply sitting in my house library. New song is out though and even though it was done in the studio, the music very much has a “live” feel. Here’s “Jump Ship” (clip of “Jump Ship”)

I put together a Spotify playlist of the songs that I talked about and thought about today for New Music Friday. Click here for that! Anything that I really messed up and missed – well, that’s why I’ll be doing Missed Music Monday on Monday.

Stand By Me: A Run for the Movie & the Cover | Day 234

5K EVERY DAY – Day #234

(opening line of “Stand By Me” Ben E. King)

The movie Stand By Me was released today in theaters back in 1986. It’s based on a writing from Stephen King called The Body, but director Rob Reiner decided to name it after the famous song

(Hook to “Stand By Me” Ben E. King)

I had no idea but Florence & The Machine did a cover of that song, too.

(clip of “Stand By Me” Florence & The Machine)

Ben E. King is still the OG on “Stand By Me” but it’s always interesting to hear how other artists interpret songs.

All this singing and talking about standing, I must stress that I did run today.

(Video Slide of Day #234)

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“The more you have to lose, the braver you get.” – by Florence Welch (from Florence & The Machine)

Man in the Box vs. Been Caught Stealing | 5K Run Day 233

5K EVERY DAY – Day #233

(Opening to “Man in the Box”)

Today, back in 1990, Alice in Chains release their debut album, Facelift, one of the first grunge albums to whip up some popularity.

(Hook to “Man in the Box”)

Also, on this very same date back in 1990, Jane’s Addiction release Ritual de lo Habitual, which frontman Perry Farrell describes as filled with “sex and violence and joy and happiness.”

(Opening line of “I’ve been caught stealin’, once when I was 5” from “Been Caught Stealing” – Jane’s Addition.

If you’re stealing at age 5, you’re just not able to run that fast at that age yet.

Speaking of running?

Happy Birthday, Robert Plant! | My Run with the Voice of Led Zeppelin | Day 232

5K EVERY DAY – Day #232

(“Black Dog” vocal intro)

The a cappella opening of “Black Dog” is one of the most iconic in rock history courtesy of Led Zepplin and their guy on the microphone – Robert Plant

(“Black Dog” musical hook)

Led Zeppelin officially disbanded on December 4, 1980, shortly after the tragic death of their drummer, John Bonham. Robert Plant continued on doing the solo thing.

(“Your Ma Said You Cried In Your Sleep Last Night” – Robert Plant)

Next month on the 26th, Plant will be releasing his 12th solo studio album called: Saving Grace. Just a constant music machine – day after day. Many people compare it to me and my running

(Video Slide of Day #232)

“Many” being just me, of course.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“My ambition was to live like music.” – by Robert Plant

He’s the birthday boy – turns 77 today.

To Be or Not To Be – who is Lady Gaga in Wednesday? | 5K Day 231

5K EVERY DAY – Day #231

(Clip of “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga)

Part 2 of the Wednesday season 2 premieres September 3rd on Netflix. Now, it was rumored that Rosaline Rotwood – a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday – would be performed by Lady Gaga.

(Hook of “Poker Face” – Lady Gaga)

But now, Jenna Ortega has hinted that Gaga is NOT a teacher. I don’t watch the show but people are confused but still very much excited about September 3rd.

(Clip of “Just Dance” – Lady Gaga)

By the way, on this date back in 2008, Lady Gaga released her debut album, The Fame, which included the hit songs “Poker Face” and “Just Dance”. What about “Just Run”?

Everything is Awesome: A Run for The Lonely Island | Day 230

5K EVERY DAY – Day #230

(opening clip of “Everything is AWESOME!!!”)

That was the theme song to the 2014 film – The Lego Movie. The song is sung by the Candian duo Tegan and Sara, but it does feature the American comedy trio The Lonely Island

(clip of “Everything is AWESOME!!!” with Andy Samberg)

One of the guys from The Lonely Island is Andy Samberg, who turns 47 today.

(clean clip of “Like A Boss”)

I was hoping that one of the lines would be “Run Like A Boss” because I ran.

Totally Whiffed on Olivia Dean—Until Now! | Missed Music Monday

missed music monday / Monday 08-25-25

(clip of “Nice To Each Other” by Olivia Dean)

Just recently, I played that song twice aloud on my laptop and both times my daughter started singing along to it. It was a real wake-up call that I totally whiffed on Olivia Dean.

(Missed Music Monday opener)

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been on a kick listening non-stop to Jessica Pratt, who has a timeless feel to her music that I’m sensing with Olivia Dean as well. Now, really, really recently, it’s been Natalie Bergman that I’ve been enjoying.

(clip of “Gunslinger” by Natalie Bergman)

Her music has that same dreamy vibe that I’m also finding in the work of Olivia Dean. We’ll save the Bergman album for another day, because today we’re talking about Olivia Dean.

(clip of “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean)

Just this past Friday, she released that song which immediately pulled me in with her classic soulful voice that reminded me of one of my favorites – Sia. Song is called “Man I Need”

(more of “Man I Need” by Olivia Dean)

That’s the third single from her upcoming album, The Art of Loving, which is scheduled to drop in its entirety next month on the 26th. If this song is any indication of the rest of the album, we should circle the date of September 26th
