“Clumsy” Isn’t As Harsh As It Sounds

MUSIC THAT MATTERS – “Lyric of the Day”

(Music Cut #1 – instrumental opening of “Clumsy”)

Released back in January of 1997

This song was gaining traction on the radio by April 25th

Despite the song’s very first line

(Music Cut #2 – opening “Clumsy” line of “Throw away your radio”)

This is “Clumsy” from Our Lady Peace

And at times…
it can sound a little harsh.

Almost mean-spirited.

(Music Cut #3 – “Clumsy” line of “You need to know that, I’ll be waving my hand”)

But it’s actually inspired by
a 1957 poem – “Not Waving but Drowning.”

The idea?

Someone is struggling…
right in front of you –

and nobody realizes it.

(Music Cut #4 – “Clumsy” line of “Watching you drown, Watching you scream”)

LYRIC OF THE DAY:
“Maybe you just need
A friend as clumsy as you’ve been
There’s no one laughing
You will be safe in here.” – Our Lady Peace
